Softly Spoken

Director: Andrew Rokita
Screenwriter: Andrew Rokita
Genre: Documentary
The idea to make a documentary about former textile company British Celanese was simply a matter of course.
There was no great plan, merely the notion that if we didn't do - and there was no one else offering to - then no one would make the picture. This is more poignant considering the place, vast 450 acre site on the outskirst of Derby was close to becoming extinct. In fact, a lot of decommisioning was already underway so we picked up on the project at the right time, and concluded just in the nick of time.
The project took the best part of 18 months, on and off! I didn't imagine it would take so long - no one did - but after a slow start, we started to get a feel for the story of this place through interviews with past employees. And you soon start to pick up on little gems, little asides that give the subject the human element, and bingo, you end up shooting for longer than you expected, made possible by a dedicated crew.
A great experience and as always a joy to listen to all the stories....
